And the winner is ... Ira Rosenberg, Saco auto dealer and great person for his big heart and philanthropy

By Gillian Graham
Staff Writer for the Biddeford-Saco-OOB Courier

Ira Rosenberg's enthusiasm for selling cars is second only to his enthusiasm for giving back to the community.  Rosenberg, owner of Prime Motor  Group, won the Courier's 2010 Great Person Award for his commitment to giving back to the community and supporting his 300 employees in Saco.

Rosenberg was nominated for the annual award by Maria Surprenant of Saco, who has worked at Prime  Honda for 19 years.  "Mr. Rosenberg has given this area over 300 jobs.  He donates to our hospitals, cancer funds, diabetes and  Sweetser for our kids," she wrote in her nomination  letter. "Most of all, I nominate Mr. Rosenberg because my husband just passed away after a long battle with cancer. I was able to stay home and take care of him. I could not have done this without him or my coworkers. We are truly a big family."

Surprenant said she wanted nothing more than to take care of her husband, Henry, during his eight-month  battle with cancer. Rosenberg encouraged her to take all  the time she needed at home and offered to support the  family in any way they needed, she said.

"It meant a lot for me to be able to be home and not  worry about not having a job. Ira provided that for us," she said. "I just didn't know how to say thank you."

Rosenberg, who splits his time between homes in Kennebunkport and Florida, said he was touched by Surprenant's nomination and each vote he received.  "I feel very humbled," he said in a phone interview from Florida. "I'm just happy to be in the position to help people."

Rosenberg, who grew up in Malden, Mass., joined the Navy after high school and served during the Korean War. While attending Suffolk University on the G.I. Bill, he got a part-time job changing tires at a used Chevrolet dealership. That, he said, is how he stumbled into the car business "strictly by accident."

Rosenberg worked his way from changing tires to the service department then sales. After marrying Judith 49 years ago, he switched careers before finding his way back to cars. He used his last $140 to open a used car lot in Salem, Mass., in 1967. He bought his first Toyota store in 1975, then went on to grow the Ira Motor Group to include multiple stores in Massachusetts.

Twelve years ago, Rosenberg decided to retire from the car business after his wife was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. They moved to Florida, but after four and a half years, Rosenberg said he wanted to go back to work.

That, he said, is how he ended up in Saco, where he opened a Toyota-Hyundai store. He expanded his business during the past six years to include seven dealerships in the Prime Motor Group.

"The people in Maine are fabulous. They're nice, they're honest, they're straightforward," he said. "My employees are my family and I feel very close to them. I enjoy the customers, they're fun to do business with. I enjoy going to work every day."

Soon after moving to Kennebunk, Rosenberg was on his way to work when he saw fire trucks racing to put out a barn fire at Sweetser in Saco.

"I made some phone calls and we started building the barn right then and there," he said.

The Rosenbergs pledged $15,000 to rebuild the barn and challenged other businesses to contribute. Since the 2004 fire, Rosenberg has continued to support Sweetser's programs for children and families because he supports the organization's mission to help people find promising futures. The Rosenbergs are sponsors of the Sweetser/Prime Motor Group Golf Classic held each June to raise money for Sweetser.

"I just feel if we can save the kids maybe we can do something for the country," he said. "If we help these kids, maybe the country will be more unified. I feel good about it in my heart."

Rosenberg and his wife, who he praises for her philanthropy, support the Dyer Library and Saco Museum, Young School Library, Saco Fire Department, Saco Spirit, Counseling Services Inc., Southern Maine Medical Center, Young Maine Readers, Maine Reads, Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maine, All Care Hospice, American Heart Association, Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

In December, Rosenberg donated 30 books and a visit by author Julie Hahnke to Thornton Academy. Rosenberg said he feels it is important to support children through educational programs and will soon offer a similar opportunity to students in Wells.

"You've got to have charity in your heart. You have to feel for your fellow humans," Rosenberg said. "We don't have enough of that in the United States."

Rosenberg said he is lucky to be in the position to give back to the community that has helped him build a successful business. "I come from a very poor background. It wasn't easy for me. There was no reason for me to succeed except the guy upstairs knows I have a very charitable heart," Rosenberg said. "He's allowed me to do this. As crazy as it seems, I really believe that."

Prime Motor Group proudly supports Toys for Tots

Ira Rosenberg, owner of Prime Motor Group, along with his team of employees from all eight dealerships in Saco, Maine collected toys in support of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Each dealership placed a vehicle in its showroom during the months of November and December and invited the employees as well as the public to come in and fill them up with toys. As a way of saying thank you, all Prime Motor Group service departments offered discounts on service to anyone who brought in a toy.

On December 11, 2010 Prime sponsored Saco Spirits Holiday Fest. Escorted by the Saco Police and Fire Departments, eight vehicles stuffed with countless toys, formed a convoy into the center of Saco where they unloaded the toys onto the Toys for Tots Trolley.

This was a great opportunity to help spread cheer to less fortunate children
and allow them to experience joy this holiday season. Helping children in need has been the primary focus of Ira and Prime's philanthropic efforts.

TAMS Students Enjoy Workshop, Presentation by Award-Winning Author

SACO-On Dec. 13, thanks to a donation from Prime Motor Group President Ira Rosenberg, award-winning fantasy author Julie Hahnke spent the day working with students at TA.

"Visits such as this one to Thornton Academy are the very best part of being an author!" Hahnke said.

A classroom set of 30 books for TAMS and Hahnke's author visit were both made possible by a generous donation from Ira Rosenberg, President of Prime Motor Group in Saco, who selected personally autographed copies of The Grey Ghost in a book giveaway on Monday afternoon.

"When I met Julie earlier this year and saw what she does with students in the schools, I knew it was special and I wanted to bring it to our kids here in Saco. Inspiration is so valuable at this age. I want our students to be inspired by Julie and to believe that they, too, can achieve great things!" Rosenberg said.

Lisa Morin, TA's Development Director, commented that Rosenberg is a generous supporter in the community and that the school was thrilled to have this unique and enriching opportunity for students.

It was indeed a thrilling day as Hahnke shared her experience of becoming a professional writer and how her interests tie into her job. The assembly presentation examined the research in different subjects that goes into her stories and how it contributes to the elements of fiction. Hahnke's knowledge of Scottish culture is first hand, as she has spent considerable time in Scotland, and in the afternoon she even had a chance to play the bagpipes on stage for students.

Hahnke also announced at TA this week that she's helping to launch a national literacy campaign aimed at middle school and high school students in collaboration with von Grey, an Atlanta-based teen rock group.

Giving Back to the Community

Prime Motor Group supports Sweetser's vision of helping people find promising futures.

Ira and Judy Rosenberg's first gift to Sweetser helped build the new barn on the Saco campus after a fire destroyed the original in the summer of 2004. They immediately pledged $15,000 and challenged other businesses to contribute.

"We had been planning to support Sweetser before the fire," said Ira."When we moved to Maine, we checked out all of the charities and Sweetser was one of our favorites. It's all about helping the kids. Sweetser has been doing it for a long time, helping so many families in need."

One of Ira's most gratifying moments was when a woman came to his Prime Toyota dealership in Saco and bought a car on the spot. She thanked him for his support of Sweetser and said she was along time employee of the organization. She also happened to be a graduate of The School at Sweetser. Ira was touched.

"Where would the kids be if Sweetser was not there for them?"asked Ira. "They could be out on the streets, lost, with no place to go. The people at Sweetser help fill the gap, helping these kids and families cope with life's many challenges."

"We commend the employees at Sweetser who work tirelessly for the good of people -- they certainly don't do it for the money," Judy added.

The Rosenberg's are active sponsors of the annual Sweetser/Prime Motor Group Golf Classic, an event held each June that raises more than $50,000 to support children and families. In addition, they have contributed to countless local organizations including the Dyer Library, Saco Museum, Young School Library, the Saco Fire Department, Saco Spirit, Counseling Services, Inc., Southern Maine Medical Center, Young Maine Readers, Maine Reads, Boys& Girls Club of Southern Maine, All Care Hospice, and American Heart Association.

In Massachusetts, where Ira and Judy grew up and built a successful auto dealership, they continue to be significant donors to Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Ira and Judy believe deeply in supporting Sweetser's vision of helping people find promising futures.

Women's Contributions Invaluable

From sales, service and accounting, women's contributions to Prime Motor Group are invaluable.
The economy is contributing to the struggle facing many Americans. The current notion is that you are lucky to have a job regardless if you're content in that position or not. For new college graduates the excitement is immediately followed with stress and fear. Higher education provides a priceless amount of resources and knowledge, however, most feel as if they are still not prepared to face the "real world".

As a recent new graduate, I had a similar anxiety. After less than a year out of school I was hired as Sales & Leasing Consultant for Prime Motor Group and immediately knew that is was a promising opportunity. The automotive industry is thriving and the opportunities are endless. It is the place where an optimistic attitude is a must. As Ira Rosenberg would say, it is "fire in the belly" that leads to success. As I further my education and pursue a Masters in Business Administration I continue to learn and grow in my career with Prime as a Public Relations Coordinator. The opportunities for women within Prime Motor Group are endless.

From sales, service and accounting, women's contributions to Prime Motor Group are invaluable. A strong connection with Maine communities and Maine people is what you will find at Prime. Ira believes that his biggest investment is the people around him and he is surrounded by a very large Prime family.

Making a Difference in Your Community

Prime Motor Group Gets Involved With Campaign for Heart Health.

Prime Motor Group President Ira Rosenberg (center) supports the American Heart Association and efforts of the Maine chapter's Directors (top clockwise) Brenda Quinn, Jennifer Labadie, Rita Zanichkowsky, and Carrie Fortino.

Ira Rosenberg, President of Prime Motor Group in Saco, Maine, is no stranger to heart disease. Last year, he underwent open-heart surgery, but like many Americans, Rosenberg considered heart disease primarily a health problem for males. He learned differently during a seminar that he hosted.

"For the past several years, I've invited a panel of three doctors to talk to a group of about 60 people," says Rosenberg. "I was mesmerized when the topic was heart disease in women. My wife, Judy, and I had no idea that more women than men are dying from it."

Brenda Quinn, Communications Director for the American Heart Association, confirms that it remains the No. 1 killer of American women. "Before we started our awareness campaign, Go Red For Women, only 13 percent of women recognized it as their leading health threat," she says. "Today, we estimate that over 50 percent of women understand the issue."

The Rosenbergs are doing their part to help get the message out about heart disease in women. Besides financial contributions to the American Heart Association, they promoted the Go Red campaign at the grand opening of Prime Toyota's new building in June. "Heart Disease is an important issue to our family," says Rosenberg. "We want everyone to take it seriously."
